On 25 and 26 August, the autumn trade show of Groen-Direct will take place. The day before this trade show, the KVBC will again inspect novelties. This inspection, the SVB-KVBC Novelty Trial 2021, is organised by the Stichting Vakbeurs Boomkwekerijen (SVB). The award-winning novelties will be presented on the first day of Groen Direct. The best novelty of this year will also be announced.

Below an overview of all registered novelties.

Entries SVB-KVBC Novelty Trial 2021

Acer Cascade collection. Van Son & Koot B.V. from Kaatsheuvel submitted three cultivars from the Acer Cascade collection for the novelty showcase. The plants from this Japanese maple collection have a strong drooping habit. Without its trunk, it practically becomes groundcover. The plants were bred by Botanic Experience BV from Kaatsheuvel, and an application for protection under plant breeding legislation has been submitted. Van Son & Koot markets these plants.

Acer palmatum ‘Sonkoot6’ (CASCADE RUBY) has drooping branches that hang tightly along the trunk. When budding in spring, the leaves are wine red in colour. In the summer, they turn a bronze-green. In autumn the leaves change to wine red once again.


Acer palmatum ‘Sonkoot7’ (CASCADE CITRINE) has drooping branches that hang tightly along the trunk. The leaves are deeply incised and convex. The leaves are lemon yellow in colour.


Acer palmatum ‘Sonkoot8’ (CASCADE EMERALD) has green, dissected leaves that are very deeply incised. The drooping branches hang tightly along the trunk.


Acer palmatum ‘Sonkoot9’ (ORANGE LACE)
Acer palmatum ‘Sonkoot9’ (ORANGE LACE) has a graceful, upright habit with drooping twigs. As a result, the plant is as wide as it is high, approx. 175 cm. The plant is spherical. The deeply incised dissected leaves begin turning orange in the spring. In the summer, the leaves change to a yellowish orange. This plant was submitted by Van Son & Koot B.V. from Kaatsheuvel, which also markets it. ORANGE LACE was bred by Botanic Experience BV from Kaatsheuvel and an application has been submitted for protection under plant breeding legislation.


Buddleja Butterfly Candy selection.Van Son & Van Son & Koot BV from Kaatsheuvel submitted the Buddleja Butterfly Candy series for the novelty showcase. This series comprises beautiful butterfly bushes with sturdy, full panicles that are available in multiple colours. The growth is compact, without branches that hang over the pot. The plants do not grow higher than 35 cm in the pot and 80 cm as a mature plant in the garden. The plants were bred by Botanic Experience BV from Kaatsheuvel, and an application for protection under plant breeding legislation has been submitted. Van Son & Koot B.V. markets these plants. Licences are managed by Plantipp BV.

Buddleja davidii ‘Botex 001’ (BUTTERFLY CANDY LITTLE PURPLE) ) has a spherical habit. The flowers are purple.


Buddleja davidii ‘Botex 002’ (BUTTERFLY CANDY LILA SWEETHEART) has a spherical habit (max. 70 cm) and blooms with many large flowers in the summer. The flowers are lilac with a yellow heart.


Buddleja davidii ‘Botex 003’ (BUTTERFLY CANDY LITTLE WHITE) has white flowers.


Buddleja davidii ‘Botex 004’ (BUTTERFLY CANDY LITTLE LILA) haslilac flowers.


Buddleja davidii ‘Botex 005’ (BUTTERFLY CANDY LITTLE PINK) has pink flowers.


Buddleja davidii ‘Botex 006’ (BUTTERFLY CANDY LITTLE RUBY) has ruby flowers.


Camellia ‘Yulan01’ (1001 SUMMER NIGHTS JASMINE)
Camellia ‘Yulan01’ (1001 SUMMER NIGHTS) has bright red flowers and flowers profusely from summer into winter. The glossy leaves are dark green in colour. The plant is winter hardy, tolerating up to -10 degrees Celsius, and has a dense habit. After 10 years, 1001 SUMMER NIGHTS grows to about 150 cm high and 100 cm wide. The plant was bred by Palm Eco-town Development Co., Ltd; Guangzhou (China) and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management. Thompson & Morgan from Ipswich (United Kingdom) submitted the plant and markets it.


Campsis tagliabuana ‘Mincamja3’ (GOLDEN TRUMPET)
Campsis tagliabuana ‘Mincamja3’ (GOLDEN TRUMPET) flowers on new wood and flowers early compared to other Campsis varieties. The bright orange-yellow flowers with red stripes appear from July to September. The plant exhibits vigorous growth, responds well to pruning and is easy to grow. Hoogeveen Plants BV from Hazerswoude-Dorp markets this Campsis and also submitted it. The plant was bred by Hortival Diffusion SAS from Beaufort-en-Anjou (France) and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Plantipp from IJsselstein is responsible for the management.


Caryopteris incana ‘SMNCVH’ (SUNNY BLUE®)
The leaves of Proven Winners® Caryopteris incana ‘SMNCVH’ (SUNNY BLUE®) are fresh yellow in colour and contrast beautifully with the bright blue flowers that appear in late summer. The leaves remain attractively yellow during flowering and do not scorch. This compact plant is highly suitable for smaller gardens and very attractive to pollinators. Valkplant BV from Hazerswoude-Dorp submitted the plant and also markets it. The plant was bred by Springmeadow Nursery from Grand Haven, MI (USA).


Cornus alba ‘Verpaalen2’ (MIRACLE)
Cornus alba ‘Verpaalen2’ (MIRACLE) is a variegated Cornus. This new Cornus variety has green-white leaves with an interesting pink edge throughout spring and summer. From late summer into autumn the foliage is an intense purple-pink. The plant stands out in winter because of its spectacular red branches. MIRACLE tolerates full sun and semi-shade. The plant grows to about 2 metres in height and width, but can also be pruned back to 1 metre. This Cornus is ideal as a garden plant, as a patio plant and for group planting. Very hardy down to -30 ºC. It was submitted by Joh. Stolwijk en Zonen Boomkwekerijen B.V. From Boskoop, which also markets the plant. MIRACLE is protected under plant breeding legislation and was bred by Boomkwekerij Verpaalen vof from Zundert.


Echinacea purpurea ‘IFECSSTS’ (TEQUILA SUNRISE)
Echinacea purpurea ‘IFECSSTS’ (TEQUILA SUNRISE) has a compact growth habit and bi-coloured inflorescence. The flowers are an orange-yellow colour. The flowering period is long, from June to September, and the flowers retain their colour for a long time. The plant produces abundant branching. The plant was submitted by Gootjes AllPlant bv from Heerhugowaard. F.N. Kempen B.V. from Mijdrecht, Van Woudenberg Tuinplanten BV from Zevenhuizen and Altanova from Moerkapelle market it. Echinacea purpurea ‘IFECSSTS’ (TEQUILA SUNRISE) was bred by Innoflora Plant Breeding B.V. from Heerhugowaard. Protection under plant breeding legislation has been applied for.


Heuchera ‘Maple Syrup’
As the name suggests, Heuchera ‘Maple Syrup’ has acer-shaped leaves with an extraordinary orange/bronze colour. The plant does not suffer from sun scorch and is a good bloomer with beige-coloured flowers. Like all other Heuchera, this plant is evergreen and fairly resistant to damp conditions. Rijnbeek perennials from Boskoop submitted and also markets the plant. Heuchera ‘Maple Syrup’ was bred by Mr. Bailey (USA). Protection under plant breeding legislation has been applied for.


Heuchera ‘Pools of Purple’
Heuchera ‘Pools of Purple’ has large striking leaves with silvery veins that lie on the burgundy leaves like a metallic layer. The plant is colourful all year round and blooms well with pink-coloured flowers. Due to its long lifespan, it is very suitable for landscaping. This Heuchera is fairly resistant to damper conditions. Rijnbeek perennials from Boskoop submitted and also markets the plant. Heuchera ‘Pools of Purple’ was bred by Mr. Bailey (USA). Protection under plant breeding legislation has been applied for.

Heuchera ‘Timeless Night’ has a compact growth habit and inflorescence. The flower stems are short and thick, and the flowers are pink in colour. The plant flowers from May until October. The dark leaves contrast beautifully with the flowers. Heuchera ‘Timeless Night’ is very hardy. Gootjes AllPlant bv from Heerhugowaard submitted it. Natuurlijk Hopmans from Wieringerwerf, F.N. Kempen B.V. from Mijdrecht and Van Woudenberg Tuinplanten BV from Zevenhuizen market it. ‘Timeless Night’ was bred by Walters Gardens Inc., Zeeland (USA) and protection under plant breeding legislation has been applied for.


Hydrangea paniculata ‘Bokomaho’ (MAGICAL MATTERHORN) 
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Bokomaho’ (MAGICAL MATTERHORN) has a compact habit with beautiful, creamy-white, full flowers. It blooms uniformly, nicely rounded on every shoot. The leaves are oval in shape and green to pale green in colour. Kolster BV from Boskoop submitted it. The plant is marketed by Boomkwekerij Jos Kolster from Boskoop. Protection under plant breeding legislation has been applied for and the plant was bred by Boot & Dart and Kolster BV, both from Boskoop.


Mahonia eurybracteata ‘Little Soft Caress’
Mahonia eurybracteata ‘Little Soft Caress’ is a very compact mutation of Mahonia eurybracteata ‘Soft Caress’, with a height of 50 cm. The plant has glossy, green, spine-free fronds, strong branches and good branching. ‘Little Soft Caress’ already begins flowering in the 1st year with yellow blossoms that smell wonderfully sweet. The plant is winter hardy. It was submitted by Van Son & Koot B.V. from Kaatsheuvel and CNB New Plants from Lisse. Protection under plant breeding legislation has been applied for. The plant was bred by Van Son & Koot bv from Kaatsheuvel, which also markets it.


Mangave ‘Red Wing’ (MAD ABOUT MANGAVE)
As an intergeneric hybrid, Mangave ‘Red Wing’ (MAD ABOUT MANGAVE) has the durability and large shapes of Agave and the unique colours, markings and soft spines of Manfreda. MAD ABOUT MANGAVE is a fast grower that thrives in full sun. That is when the colours and distinctive leaf markings come out best. The plant forms a very large, refined rosette consisting of a multitude of pronounced deep-red leaves.
This Mangave was bred by Walters Gardens Inc., Zeeland (USA) and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management. F.N. Kempen vof from Mijdrecht and Van Son & Koot B.V. from Kaatsheuvel market the plant and submitted it.


Nandina domestica ‘NRL2015’ (RED LIGHT)
Nandina domestica ‘NRL2015’ (RED LIGHT) has variegated green and white leaves and strikingly red new shoots. This compact Nandina has an upright and bushy shape. It is approx. 60 cm high and 50 cm wide. RED LIGHT thrives best in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. The plant was bred by Beotanics from Co. Kilkenny (Ireland) and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management. Tree nursery R. Van Vliet New Plants from Stroe submitted the plant for the showcase and also markets it.


Physocarpus opulifolius ‘ZLEYel2’ (RASPBERRY LEMONADE)
Physocarpus opulifolius ‘ZLEYel2’ (RASPBERRY LEMONADE) is a plant with a compact habit. The small leaves are a pale, green-yellow colour. The white flowers appear in spring and give way to coral-red berries in autumn. Because of its compact growth, RASPBERRY LEMONADE is very suitable for small gardens. Kolster bv from Boskoop submitted the plant for the novelty showcase. Van den Dool Botanic from Boskoop markets it. This Physocarpus was bred by David Zlesak from River Falls, Wisconsin (USA), and Plants Nouveau from Mobile, Alabama (USA) is responsible for the management. Trachelospermum asiaticum ‘TRSUZ01’ (STAR OF MILANO)
Trachelospermum asiaticum ‘TRSUZ01’ (STAR OF MILANO) has variegated dark-green and creamy-white glossy leaves. The plant blooms abundantly with pink, fragrant flowers. The flowering period is long: from May to September. STAR OF MILANO is an evergreen, easy climber that grows to about 3 m high and 2 m wide. This plant prefers a spot in the sun and is drought tolerant. This means it does not need a lot of water. The plant was bred by Yuji Suzuki from Saitama (Japan) and is protected under plant breeding legislation. Planttip BV from IJsselstein is responsible for the management. Viburnum opulus ‘SMNVODR’ (OH CANADA®)
The young leaves of Proven Winners® Viburnum opulus ‘SMNVODR’ (OH CANADA®) are a fresh red and resemble small maple leaves. The leaves turn to golden yellow and retain this colour all season. They do not scorch. The plant flowers from mid-spring with white umbels. During the summer, these become bright red berries that contrast beautifully with the golden-yellow foliage.
